We've already seen what Sal does when he is apart from Dean. He makes sandwiches and runs home to his aunt. Then he mopes around for a year waiting for Dean to show up again. Sal does not seem to have any initiative of his own. He is like a depressed little kid who runs away from home, but finds he does not have anywhere to go.
