Sal and His Achievements
After reading the chapters, I found that Sal really can achieve his goals. I know fooling around at his job doesn't say much, but I think if he really enjoyed his job it would have been different. He has the ability to reach his ends but doesn't have the right means, if that makes any sense. For instance, Sal says, "I decided to leave [...]. ' No, dammit,' I said to myself, 'I promised I wouldn't leave till I climbed that mountain'" (78). Even though he had that HUGE blowout with Remi at dinner, he decided he would stay an extra day because he had the ambition to climb the mountain. So I thought that added a little spark to his character. Also, Kerouac has repeated this phrase or something similar a lot, "Most of them were running away from something-usually the law" (65). Finally, to add on to Sal's fondness of hats, he also seems fond of laughs; which he finds distinguishes a person's personality.
