I really don't like Dean. I feel like he is that bad influence that you don't like your bros hanging out with. I mean a lot a people are comparing this novel to Catcher in the Rye in how they don't like it, but I loved Catcher in The Rye and I loved Holden as a character, but Dean, although it might be the same, "wanting to be free" weird-ish character, I just think he is a loser who has a lot of oppurtunity and people in his life, but he just doesn't reciprocate the love, or grasp the oppurtunities. Who leaves their child for a road trip? If Dean was my bro, I would break his face.
Wow that's totally not whacko. Sorry...
What I do like though, and this is gonna sound so contradictory and flip-floppy and totally defeats my first paragaph is Dean doing what he thinks; for him first thought best thought is EVERYTHING. He decides he wants to see his friend and his girl make love, he says it. He wants to leave his family for a road trip, he drops all of his values and responsibility, and goes along with it. It's like what Walt Whitman would say, and this might be a stretch but:
"To the real artist in humanity, what are called bad manners are often the most picturesque and significant of all. "
I don't know if that goes with what I'm saying, but I like it.
Good Night.
