On what Jed said, Dean Moriarty could easily allude to Professor James Moriarty from Sherlock Holmes. The "holy con-man" quote is interestingly reminiscent of the "Napoleon of Crime" quote by Sherlock Holmes. Between that and Carlo Marx, I doubt that the names are coincidental.
