One thing that really stuck out at me was in the beginning where Sal says that he wished he "were a Denver Mexican, or even a poor overworked Jap, anything but I was so drearily, a white man disillusioned." (180). He says his "white ambitions" were what stopped him from settling down with Terry. There's obviously racial steryotyping here, but I think this says a lot about Sal. He's been following his friends around, having all kinds of experiences, going everywhere, but he doesn't seem to be enjoying it. He seems to want to settle down, but isn't able to bring himself to do it. I doubt this is simply a case of having high ambitions, so what do you guys think the real reason is?
