I'm pretty sure none of the names were coincidental. They really aren't very subtle. Karl Marx and Carlo Marx... that's blatantly obvious. And the narrator's name is Sal Paradise.
I think the parallel between this novel and Sherlock Holmes is very interesting.
Also, about Dean and Carlo: I could be wrong, but hadn't Marylou left Dean by the time he started talking to Carlo?
