I love how his description of LA then could be the same as if someone walked those exact streets today. My favorite line in that is when he says, "Fat screaming women ran across the boulevard to get in line for quiz shows" (87). It almost sums up the insanity that encompasses those who dare to venture into the "jungle" of LA.



Kerouac definately enjoys the word "lugubrious" almost as much as Hawthorne liked using some form of "ignominy". Well, they are rather entertaining...



When Terry goes to her friend to pick up her clothing, Sal's description of the tenement is in a rather nonchalant tone until he starts talking about her friends two young children, who "bounced on the bed...they put their arms around [Sal] and look at [him] with wonder," (88). His brief description of the family helps to make him appear softer, as if maybe one day he does know what he wants to do, what he wants to have..



"SP" is...a railroad track, a kind of train, a leafy garden vegetable?
