I agree with a mix of Jed and Ash's comments. While reading this, even though I liked Terry and her influence on Sal, I did not have much hope for her sticking around for very long. It seemed too early in the novel for Sal to figure out what he wants/needs. It didn't surprise me very much when she left, nor did it surprise me very much to see his lack of emotion about it. He seems to have this go-with-the-flow kind of feel about life, and he doesn't let anything hold him back. He just goes with whatever happens, and watches/waits to see where it's going to take him next.

While I understand the frusteration behind the contradictory nature of the book, at the same time, I find it almost comforting. Sal is normal...he doesn't know exactly what he wants or how he's going to get it. People change their minds just as often as he does, we're just not always as informed of it as we are now. I didn't find it that bothersome, I found it added to his character and made him more real. He seemed like the type of guy who would have bouncing emotions/opinions.
