He cannot seem to keep a job. The most lucrative thing he has done in the entire story so far is work as a horrible (corrupt, lazy, thieving, etc.) cop. Which payed very well in comparison with cotton picking. Most of the money he made did get sent to his aunt, however. So I would not say is taking advantage of her.
